Adults Should Read Adult Books →
The only thing more embarrassing than catching a guy on the plane looking at pornography on his computer is seeing a guy on the plane reading “The Hunger Games.” Or a Twilight book. Or Harry Potter. The only time I’m O.K. with an adult holding a children’s book is if he’s moving his mouth as he reads.  *Blink*  Waitaminute… WHAT?  D:{ Such ignorant, shortsighted, and closed-minded views...

GELA Prison Project: EPL Book Borrowing Project →
Soooo… I’ve volunteered with GELA to help out with their book borrowing project at the local women’s prison.  Basically, I will be paired with another volunteer and we’ll be in charge of delivering a collection of library books to the women inmates once a month, as well as transcribing book requests from the women to include in the next month’s delivery. It’s...

Celebrating the Complicated Girl →
An excellent article from the YA Highway blog, about the way female characters are portrayed in young adult fiction (though this can be easily applied to literature for any age groups) and the pressure upon authors to write “good” female characters, as opposed to real ones. On a similar note, another article worth reading from the same site, “What Makes a Strong Female Character...

John Green's tumblr: Why Libraries Are Different... →
Yesterday, popular YA novelist and nerdfighter, John Green, tweeted:  @realjohngreen: I’m astonished how many people (many dozens) email me to inform me they are illegally downloading my work. Not okay. GO TO THE LIBRARY. John followed up today with the following blog post, explaining very simply why borrowing a book from a library and downloading that same book illegally on the internet...

Exquisite Informational Immersion: Fusing the... →
Very interesting recap and review of some of the panels from this year’s Public Library Association conference, voicing a lot of thoughts about readers’ advisory.  Very cool to see the reviewer taking into account concepts like fanfiction and Goodreads — two ideas I think need to be further embraced by public libraries. I would have loved to go have gone to this conference~ ...

After 244 Years, Encyclopaedia Britannica Stops... →
Bowing to the competition online, the encyclopedia’s publisher said the 2010 edition, a 32-volume set that weighs in at 129 pounds, would be the last. I already posted elsewhere about this last week, but I figured it deserved a link here too.  Poor Britannica.  *Pat pat*

The Whitewashing of YA Literature
I remember reading some articles a couple of years back about the blatant whitewashing that publishers inflict on the covers of books, most notably young adult titles.  The issue was highlighted at that time by the release of Justine Larbalestier’s new novel, Liar, which featured a black teenage protagonist; yet Bloomsbury opted to display a white girl on the American cover, despite the...
